The TOEFL Writing Section

The TOEFL Writing Section of the TOEFL iBT exam tests and measures the ability for the test-taker to communicate effectively through writing in an academic situation, at a university level; writing about different types of topics.  The TOEFL Writing Section tests and measures the abilities of the test-taker to organize his or her ideas and write effectively  in two different situations.

 


 The TOEFL Writing Section tests these different areas:

Writing A Report Based On Information Taken From Written And Spoken Sources (The Integrated Writing Task)

This writing task tests:

  • the ability to gather important information from a written source (utilized through effective note-taking)
  • the ability to gather important information from a spoken source (utilized through effective note-taking)
  • the ability to understand an assigned task about information and to decifer which information (from the test-taker’s notes) is vital to fulfill the task
  • the ability to synthesize, summarize and express the information (from the test-taker’s notes) through a piece of academic writing that is intelligible, cohesive, and effectivly fulfills the specific assigned task
  • the ability to complete a task in a set amount of time that may be representative of someone who is able to function intellectually, at a university-level, through the English language

** The test-taker is not tested on their note-taking skills, though effective note-taking is vital to fulfill this task to the degree that is representative of a university situation **

Writing An Opinion Piece About A Random Topic (Usually Relating To “Life”, School, or, Academic or Social Issues)

This writing task tests:

  • the ability to understand a topic and question that entails two divergent “sides” or opinions
  • the ability for the test-taker to choose a “side” or to make a decision based on which is more closely aligned with the test-taker’s own opinion
  • the ability for the test-taker to formulate his or her opinion along with supporting reasons, examples and supporting details and to organize them into an intelligible and cohesive piece of writing
  • the ability to complete the task effectively in a set amount of time that may be representative of someone who is able to function intellectually, at a university-level, through the English language
